Skullcap - Scutellaria lateriflora
Skullcap is a hardy perennial herb of the mint family, Lamiaceae, that is native to North America. . It is also found in wetland areas from Quebec and Newfoundland west to British Columbia and south to California, Louisiana and Florida. The leaves of blue skullcap have been used in herbal medicines as a sedative and tranquilizer and for treatment of a variety of conditions. Some of these conditions include insomnia, anxiety, convulsions and certain neurological disorders. Skullcap is a powerful medicinal herb and it is used in alternative medicine as an anti-inflammatory, abortifacient, antispasmodic, slightly astringent, emmenagogue, febrifuge, nervine, sedative, and tonic. It should not be given to a pregnant persons as it may induce miscarriage.
